Why we're getting Scotland and Northern Ireland ready now, not in December

Connor Stanley · 7 October 2026

Quick answer

Scotland and Northern Ireland have until 1 January 2027 for Digital Waste Tracking Phase 1. We're getting ready now instead of waiting for December, and there's a real reason why.

England and Wales moved into DEFRA’s Digital Waste Tracking Phase 1 on 1 October 2026. Scotland and Northern Ireland follow on 1 January 2027: the same mandate, the same requirements, three months behind.

Watching the England & Wales rollout up close, the thing that actually caused last-minute stress wasn’t choosing software. It was everything around it: confirming permit details, getting an API code issued, and getting a team used to a digital workflow before go-live day, not on it. Sites that started that process in September were fine. Sites that started it in the last week of September were not.

Three months isn’t a lot of runway if a Scottish or Northern Irish receiving site doesn’t start thinking about this until December. It’s plenty of runway if it starts now.

That’s the reasoning behind our Scotland & Northern Ireland guide: not a prediction that something urgent is happening today, but a deliberate choice to have the real, useful answer ready now, for the handful of receiving sites already thinking ahead, rather than writing it in December alongside everyone else.

If that’s you, the practical next step is the same one we’d give an England & Wales site: get your permit details confirmed, and get your team working digitally before the date requires it, not on it. Checkwright’s own DEFRA compliance results are published here if you want to see exactly what’s been tested before you make that call.
