DEFRA’s written production approval for Checkwright arrived on 2 October 2026. Production Digital Waste Tracking submission is live now.
What actually happened
Before any software provider can submit real waste receipt data to DEFRA, it has to pass DEFRA’s Production Approval Test (PAT): a fixed set of 14 scenarios, run against DEFRA’s real test sandbox, each checked against a defined expected outcome. Checkwright passed all 14, including the two that deliberately test for a correct rejection, with no exemptions. The full results, scenario by scenario, are published here.
DEFRA reviewed that evidence and confirmed, in writing, that Checkwright meets the Digital Waste Tracking Phase 1 requirements. The real production credentials are now live.
Where things stand
Checkwright is registered with DEFRA as a Digital Waste Tracking software provider, with full production access live. DEFRA’s own wording for this is “meets the requirements,” not “approved,” so that’s the precise term we use too, rather than overclaiming.
A GOV.UK listing is coming next: DEFRA has told us it’s on the way, on their own timeline, and we’ll post again the moment it actually appears. See the full PAT results for exactly what’s been tested.
What’s next
If your receiving site is in England or Wales, Phase 1 already applies to you. If you’re in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you have until 1 January 2027, and there’s a real reason to get ready before then rather than waiting.
